“At Play and at Fire its Good manners to Give Place to the last Commer, and affect not to Speak Louder than Ordinary.” G. Washington

Cunning and closed, a canker that blots out care,
we carry fear in our hearts like a boulder,
blocking closed the door, giving strangers a glare.
“Cunning and closed, a canker that blots out care,
that’s you,” we say, carving stone into a nightmare
in which, trapped, we trade ‘hold her’ for ‘smolder.’
Cunning and closed, a canker that blots out care,
we carry fear in our hearts like a boulder.

  1. This reminded me of the FB post you shared about not being allowed to be authentic at work. I feel a bit of that myself. Perhaps pepple forge tjeir own prisons

    • Perhaps. And perhaps our prisons are formed around us, in collaboration with those who’ve come before and after us.

      • Quite possibly true – might be formed by others. But that seems like predestination. I like to think my story is not completely written for me.

      • I was thinking less of predestination than of epigenetics, and how trauma from one generation literally rewrites the DNA of the victim and their children. It doesn’t mandate a particular outcome, and it can be changed, but it creates a bias that predisposes to the next trauma. The difference between predestination and predisposition. Hmmm.
